Why are FR clothes so expensive? FR garments can cost more than ordinary clothing because their materials and finished construction must support documented protective performance. Fabric type, garment features, required testing, size range and supply conditions can all influence price. There is no single cost premium that applies to every FR item.

Protective performance changes the product specification

A work shirt made for a documented protective requirement is a different purchasing specification from a casual shirt that looks similar. Compare manufacturer information for the exact model rather than treating weight, color or brand appearance as proof of equivalence.

ASTM F1506, for example, addresses performance specifications for flame-resistant and electric-arc-rated protective clothing. The presence of documented performance matters, but it does not establish why a particular seller has set a particular price. Ask for comparable product information before drawing conclusions.

Fabric and features influence comparisons

A lightweight shirt, insulated coverall and waterproof outer layer are different garments. Fabric composition, construction, insulation, closures and other features can affect their cost. A higher price does not automatically mean a garment is more suitable for your assignment; the safety specification remains the starting point.

A brand name is not the entire cost explanation

Different brands offer different styles and size ranges. Compare approved models with similar features and documented performance. Without equivalent specifications, the price gap between two garments may reflect different products rather than a straightforward premium for a name.

Order structure adds costs

  • Employee quantities and the complete size mix.
  • Any logo or name decoration and setup requirements.
  • Freight arrangements and separate destinations.
  • Partial shipments or supplemental purchases.

Ask which charges apply to your order. Volume terms vary by model and purchasing conditions, so do not assume every bulk request receives a fixed discount. A quote should identify enough detail to compare the actual delivered order.

Manage the budget without changing the approved requirement

Collect sizes before ordering and separate confirmed worker issue from spare garments. Review fit when changing models to reduce avoidable corrections. Consider approved alternatives with the safety team, and ask for current availability instead of making a last-minute purchase from incomplete information.

Follow manufacturer care instructions and your employer’s replacement process. Planning garment use and replacements is useful for budgeting, but it should not extend use beyond what that process allows.
